In this post of critical literacy, I will analyze on two superstitious’ belief based on left brain perspectives and right brain perspectives:
Ø Do not sing in the kitchen, or else you will marry with an old man.
Right Brain Perspectives:
I. The superstition can make sense because the elderly people by that time are very attentive of what people think about their daughter if they tie the knot with aged man.
II. The superstition can be accepted because in the early years, people don’t have any entertainment like nowadays, so in order to entertain themselves, the daughters sing in the kitchen.
III. The superstition is logic because for the Malay culture, it is not appropriate for the women to sing or reveal their voice to the outsiders as it is consider to be the ‘aurat’ of women in Islam.
Left Brain Perspective:
I. The superstition is nonsense because the fate of the daughters cannot be determined by singing in the kitchen as all destinies had been decided by god.
II. The superstition cannot be accepted because there is no connection between singings in the kitchen to marrying an aged man.
III. The superstition is erroneous because love doesn’t relate to age, it is based on one own choice of choosing his or her partner.
Second superstition:
Do not open umbrella inside the house, or else snakes will come.
Right Brain Perspectives:
I. The superstition can be accepted because it is against the Malay’s norms to bring or kept umbrellas inside the house as it is inappropriate.
II. The superstition is logic because if the umbrellas that had been used kept inside the house, it will make a mess and attracts other creatures to enter the house.
III. The superstition can be considered because umbrellas are usually kept outside the house and it was a habit practiced by all culture.
I. The superstition cannot be accepted because as we cannot foresee what will enter the house doesn’t matter good or bad things by just opening the umbrella inside the house.
II. The superstition is nonsense because anything can enter the house, not only the snake, even if there is no umbrella at all and it is due to the surrounding area of the house.
III. The superstition is not logic as snake is not scientifically attracted to umbrella and also umbrellas have no connection with snakes either.
